Ive tried a few! After trying expensive and cheap ones I would suggest something like the Moleskin Hard Cover - the hard cover helps with writing in random places.
Dot journals are also something to have a try of but thats more for daily to do's, etc.
Oh and dont forget the pen. This is subjective so go to somewhere like office works and go crazy trying all the pens out until you fine one you like.

I've got a lined one and have used the dot grid one in the past. Amazon's price isn't too bad actually.
